Course Aims

The Diploma of Accounting provides students with a solid grounding in the accounting discipline. Students will develop practical skills in financial accounting, budgeting, auditing, management accounting, financial forecasting, taxation and accounting information system. Students will build skills in dynamic business tools such as spreadsheets and computerised accounting software.

This qualification reflects professional accounting job roles in financial services and other industries. It contributes to, but does not encompass, educational requirements for providing tax agent services.

The primary pathway from this qualification is employment in accounting job roles with duties such as:

  • Introducing and maintaining accounting systems
  • Maintaining internal control systems
  • Preparing financial statements for a non-reporting entity
  • Preparing tax returns

Note: Persons providing a tax agent service must be registered by the Tax Practitioners Board and meet educational and other requirements for registration including a designated period of experience. Persons seeking tax agent registration should check current registration requirements with the Board as this is regularly under review.

Teaching Methods

Delivery of this program has a focus on the development of professional knowledge and workplace skills. This course is designed for the concurrent development of theoretical knowledge and practical work skills. Students will be undertaking lectures and practical tutorials. The combination of knowledge and skills development undertaken concurrently provides for future competent performance in the workplace.

Assessment Methods

The emphasis of assessment is on collection of evidence, holistic assessment against the module purpose and trainer/assessor judgment. The focus is on the integration of areas of theoretical knowledge, practical skills and proper work attitudes.
The following assessment methods will be used:

  • Written exams
  • Simulated workplace activities/ scenarios/role plays
  • Projects/Assignment
  • Class Activities

Normal learning and assessment will take place in an integrated classroom and real workplace environment.

Course Entry Requirements

Student must have completed the following 9 core units from the Certificate IV in Accounting FNS40610 or equivalent.

3. BSBOH S303B Contribute to OH S hazard identification and risk assessment
4. FNSACC301A Process financial transactions and extract interim reports
5. FNSACC403A Make decisions in a legal context
6. FNSACC404A Prepare financial statements for non-reporting entities
7. FNSACC406A Set up and operate a computerised accounting system
8. FNSBKG404A Carry out business activity and instalment activity statement tasks
9. FNSINC401A Apply principles of professional practice to work in the financial services industry

The entry requirements can be met by evidence of equivalent competency to the above units through recognition of prior learning (RPL).
